How to apply for a public defender…

Before assigning you a public defender, the court will first evaluate your ability to pay your own costs of defense. The standards that are used are similar to those used by other agencies in evaluating eligibility for such things as public housing, welfare, food stamps or medical coupons.

You must submit an application to the court to be considered eligible for a public defender.
